The All-Electric 2026 Subaru Trailseeker: A New Horizon for Off-Road EVs

Subaru has made a significant stride into the electric vehicle market with the unveiling of the all-new 2026 Trailseeker, an all-electric SUV showcased at the 2025 New York International Auto Show. Representing the next generation of Subaru vehicles, the Trailseeker combines the brand’s renowned capability and safety with an advanced electric powertrain. This development marks Subaru’s second foray into battery-electric SUVs.
At the heart of the Trailseeker lies an advanced electric powertrain delivering a robust 375 horsepower.

This power enables an engaging driving experience, complemented by the legendary Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, a hallmark of the brand. This standard feature ensures exceptional grip and control across various terrains. Furthermore, the Trailseeker boasts a commendable 8.3 inches of ground clearance, reinforcing its off-road credentials, akin to the Solterra.

Subaru engineers have specifically tuned the suspension and all-wheel-drive system to provide straight-line stability and control on diverse surfaces. The vehicle uses acceleration sensors to adapt to dynamic load during acceleration, braking, or turning, powering the correct wheels for enhanced traction and stability. The inclusion of dual-function X-MODE® with Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control further enhances its capability both on and off the beaten track. Driving enthusiasts will note the claimed 0-60 mph acceleration in approximately 4.4 seconds.

Addressing charging convenience, the 2026 Trailseeker adopts the North American Charging Standard (NACS), granting access to over 15,000 locations across the country for quick charging. The vehicle is powered by a 74.7-kWh lithium-ion, high-capacity battery, offering a range of more than 260 miles on a single charge. A new battery pre-conditioning feature compensates for temperature drops, ensuring quicker charging even in cold conditions. The battery can be topped up at up to an estimated 150kW using a DC charger.

Beyond its dynamic capabilities, the Trailseeker also offers impressive utility, with a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds. This allows owners to haul trailers and boats with ease. Compared to the Subaru Solterra, the Trailseeker features a larger rear cargo area and a taller roof, providing more space for both passengers and gear. The interior is designed to maximise space, featuring an open and airy cabin, a fully flat rear floor, and ample cargo room. A 120V outlet is also available in the cargo area for on-the-go power.

The design of the 2026 Trailseeker blends ultramodern aesthetics with functional SUV elements. Protective lower cladding, available 20-inch alloy wheels, and raised roof rails contribute to its rugged yet sophisticated appearance. The interior features water-resistant StarTex® upholstery, ensuring durability for adventurous lifestyles. Technology is also at the forefront, with a standard 14-inch touchscreen multimedia system offering wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integration. Convenience is further enhanced by dual wireless chargers for smartphones and two fast USB-C chargers for rear-seat passengers.

Safety remains a core Subaru value, and the Trailseeker comes standard with EyeSight® Driver Assist Technologies. This suite includes features such as Pre-Collision Braking, Front Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitors, Lane Departure Alert, a panoramic view monitor, Emergency Stop Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, and Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control. Specific trim levels, such as the Premium, further include Traffic Jam Assist low-speed hands-free driving, Active Lane Change Assist, Front Cross-Traffic Alert, and the DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System.

The Trailseeker will be available in Premium, Limited, and Touring trims. The Limited trim builds upon the Premium features with additions like a Harman Kardon premium audio system, Digital Key, Panoramic View Monitor, and heated rear outboard seats. The top-tier Touring trim includes a panoramic glass roof, smart rear-view mirror, and heated and ventilated front seats. A range of available colours includes Brilliant Bronze Metallic, Daybreak Blue Pearl, and Crystal Black Silica.

The Trailseeker is built on the same e-SGP (Subaru Global Platform) as the Solterra, which itself is a development from the Toyota e-TNGA platform. However, Subaru engineers claim that only around 30 per cent of parts are shared with the Solterra, with the rest being all-new. The Trailseeker is also notably larger than the Solterra, being more than 6 inches longer and nearly an inch taller, with the added length dedicated to increased rear cargo space.

While the initial launch is slated for the US market in early 2026, there are indications of potential global availability. Subaru Australia acknowledged the New York debuts, including the Trailseeker, and stated they look forward to sharing what these global unveilings mean for the Australian market in due course. There is also speculation about its export to right-hand drive markets like the UK in the second half of 2026, further opening the possibility for an Australian launch.

In conclusion, the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker represents a significant step forward for Subaru, blending its core strengths in all-wheel drive capability and safety with a modern and potent electric powertrain. With its impressive ground clearance, towing capacity, and advanced technology, the Trailseeker positions itself as a compelling option in the emerging market for off-road capable electric SUVs. Its unveiling has generated considerable excitement, and enthusiasts await further details on pricing and broader market availability.
