Chery, a Chinese automaker, has unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the Omoda 5 EV, at the Geneva/Qatar Motor Show. The Omoda 5 EV is a futuristic crossover that aims to compete with the likes of the Hyundai Kona Electric and the MG ZS EV in the global market. The Omoda 5 EV is based on the Omoda 5 SUV, which is also available with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that produces 197 hp and 214 lb-ft of torque.
The Omoda 5 EV, however, swaps the combustion engine for a 61 kWh battery pack that powers an electric motor at the front axle. The electric motor delivers 204 hp, which allows the Omoda 5 EV to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 7.6 seconds. The battery pack also provides a claimed range of 280 miles (450 km)on a single charge, which is comparable to some of the best electric vehicles in the segment. The Omoda 5 EV supports 110 kW DC fast charging, which can replenish the battery from 0 to 80% in just 30 minutes.
