Well, isn’t this a sight? Fresh off the heels of their sleek SU7 saloon, Xiaomi EV has just lifted the covers off their first-ever SUV – the Xiaomi YU7. Pronounced /ü/ or [y˥˩], the name apparently harks back to the Chinese phrase “御风而行“, which delightfully translates to “riding the wind”. And after diving into the details, that name seems fitting for this ambitious new model. Positioned squarely as a high-performance luxury SUV, the YU7 is aiming for the independent, confident, and dynamic types out there. Don’t just think of it as a taller SU7; the sources say it’s a completely reimagined SUV from the ground up. It does share that evolutionary design language with the SU7, but aims for its own bold identity, blending elegant styling, high performance, and premium comfort with generous space, all wrapped up in cutting-edge tech.
Design: Proportions, Presence, and Posh Details
True to the Xiaomi EV brand’s core “beauty” gene, the YU7 certainly looks the part. It’s a mid-to-large SUV with some serious presence. We’re talking dimensions of 4999 mm long, 1996 mm wide, and 1600 mm tall, with a substantial 3000 mm wheelbase. The design team was clearly obsessed with proportions, citing figures like a 3:1 wheel-to-body ratio and a classic low-slung posture. They’ve even highlighted luxury hallmarks like the 1:3 head-to-body ratio and a 680 mm L113 dimension. One standout feature is the frankly enormous 3.11 ㎡ clamshell aluminum hood, apparently the largest in mass production, seamlessly integrated and opening up to a 141 L electric front trunk.
Look closer, and you’ll spot the evolution of the Xiaomi design language. The signature “waterdrop headlights” from the SU7 get a revamp with an innovative hollowed-out design, featuring air channels linked to front hood vents – a first in its class, adding visual aggression and enhancing the ultra-wide-angle lighting. Around the back, the halo taillight also evolves. It’s cleaner, more sculpted, and unlike the SU7, has downward-angled corners to accentuate the SUV’s powerful stance. They’ve even used premium ultra-red lighting (>632 nm), which is a luxury vehicle staple, for better nighttime visibility. And because details matter, the YU7 introduces an all-new electric-flush door handle system that stays tucked away for better aesthetics and aerodynamics, only extending automatically when you approach with the key, enhanced by ambient lighting.
Aerodynamics are clearly a focus, too. Inheriting tricks from the SU7, the YU7 features a multi-duct architecture with 10 through-flow air channels and 19 optimised vents. The hollowed spoiler cuts drag by 10 counts, and an active grille system with 100 adjustable louvers adds an 18 counts improvement. Even that big clamshell hood contributes, reducing drag by 2 counts. All these refinements across over 40 airflow zones result in an exceptional drag coefficient of Cd 0.245, which apparently translates to a 59 km CLTC range improvement compared to pre-optimisation figures.
Colour Palette: Nature’s Touch
They’re launching the YU7 with three rather vibrant, nature-inspired colours: Emerald Green, Titanium Silver, and Lava Orange. The Emerald Green sounds particularly special, described as a rare, high-saturation hue inspired by Colombian emeralds, achieved through an intricate dual-layer paint system with three tint reservoirs.
It uses ultra-fine aluminium flakes and a translucent pearl coat to mimic a gem’s depth and light play. Titanium Silver uses coarser flakes for maximum brilliance and embodies the “high-performance luxury” vibe, while the Lava Orange, carried over from the SU7, uses a dual-coat process for dramatic tonal shifts.
Stepping Inside: An Aircraft Cockpit with Luxury Comfort
Xiaomi is really pushing the boat out with the interior, aiming for an “aircraft cockpit” feel with some serious tech. Building on the SU7’s central touchscreen and rear displays, the YU7 adds two major innovations: the Xiaomi HyperVision Panoramic Display and a remote control panel. The HyperVision display is quite revolutionary – it’s not just a screen but an advanced platform using a triple Mini LED array and “Panoramic Curved Projection Technology” to seamlessly project information onto the lower windshield area. This gives you an expansive 1.1-metre ultra-wide display with high resolution (108 PPD) and impressive brightness (1,200 nits peak). Special coatings and algorithms combat glare and ensure legibility even in direct sunlight.
This display is designed to be super smart and personalised.
Drivers get speed and navigation info right in their sightline, while passengers can customise their entertainment with movable music interfaces and real-time lyrics. It adapts for turn-by-turn guidance during manoeuvres, switches to Simulate Reality road mapping with driver assistance engaged, and even visualises powertrain and suspension adjustments based on drive modes. You can configure it with five modular categories: instrument readouts, media controls, time zones, weather updates, and navigation. Paired with the remote control panel for passengers, it creates a connected and intelligent cabin experience.
Despite the sporty exterior proportions, the cabin is surprisingly spacious. Designed using an 188 cm model, it offers generous headroom (100 mm front, 77 mm rear) and rear legroom (73 mm), apparently beating competitors. This space efficiency comes partly from Xiaomi’s CTB integrated battery tech and reduced floor thickness. Storage is also excellent, with 1,970 L total capacity. This includes the 141 L front trunk (fits a 24-inch suitcase) and a 678 L main cargo area that expands to 1,758 L with seats folded. Plus, there are 71 L of clever interior compartments. They highlight the cabin’s clean, unobstructed view with a layered dashboard design that feels less bulky than traditional SUVs.
A standard 1.7 ㎡ panoramic sunroof adds to the airy feel.
Luxury and comfort haven’t been overlooked. The cabin features 100% soft-touch surfaces in high-contact areas, certified OEKO-TEX Class 1, meaning it’s safe even for infants. The seats are upholstered in Nappa leather with a fine rock-grain texture. Up front, both driver and passenger get dual zero-gravity seats with one-touch recline, a 10-point massage function, and a multi-layer structure designed for both comfort and support on long trips. The rear passengers aren’t left out, with 135° luxury recliners that adjust electrically. Xiaomi sees this cabin as a “democratisation of luxury,” blending tech and comfort for everyone.
Performance & Chassis: Power and Precision
Under the skin, the YU7 packs a punch. It uses Xiaomi EV’s self-developed “three core electric technologies”. The evolved Xiaomi HyperEngine V6s Plus powers the performance. In the dual-motor, four-wheel-drive setup, you get a maximum horsepower of 690 PS and peak power of 508 kW. This rockets the YU7 from 0-100 km/h in just 3.23 seconds and on to a top speed of 253 km/h. The HyperEngine V6s Plus uses segmented magnetic steel tech to boost efficiency and range.
The chassis system is designed to match that performance with comfort. Braking from 100 km/h takes just 33.9 metres. Hardware includes a sophisticated front double wishbone + rear five-link independent suspension, combined with closed double-chamber air springs and continuous damper control. You also get Brembo®️ four-piston fixed calipers and Xiaomi smart chassis tech. The continuous damper control adapts quickly to road conditions, offering both sportiness and comfort, with a greater adjustment range than the SU7 Max. The air springs allow for 5 levels of height adjustment (up to 75 mm range, max 222 mm ground clearance) and adjustable stiffness. Despite being an SUV, it boasts a tight 5.7 m turning radius.
Range and Charging: Going the Distance, Quickly
Good news on the range front. The YU7 comes in three flavours: Standard, Pro, and Max. The entry-level Standard variant gets a 96.3 kWh battery and an impressive 835 km CLTC range, which Xiaomi claims makes it the longest-range pure electric SUV with a sub-100 kWh battery and a class leader. The four-wheel-drive Pro (96.3 kWh) and Max (101.7 kWh) versions offer 760 km and 770 km CLTC range, respectively, ranking first among 4WD electric SUVs.
Charging is rapid thanks to an 800V silicon carbide high-voltage platform with a peak voltage of 897V. It can hit a maximum charging rate of 5.2C, meaning a 10% to 80% charge takes just 12 minutes, or you can add 620 km of range in 15 minutes.
Safety First: Built Like a Tank
Xiaomi is putting a big emphasis on safety, calling it the “lifeblood” of Xiaomi EV. The YU7 uses an upgraded armor-cage steel-aluminum hybrid body structure from the Xiaomi Modena Platform. It features a larger front crumple zone (659 mm) and the same super-strong three-piece Xiaomi Hyper Die-Casting Floor as the SU7, which can withstand rear collisions up to 90 km/h. A new 1500 MPa high-strength crossbeam protects the battery pack from road debris. The battery cells also get extra protection from a bulletproof coating (like the SU7 Ultra) that’s over 10 times more resistant to tears and punctures than standard coatings.
A significant innovation mentioned is the use of “2200 MPa Xiaomi Ultra-high strength steel”, a new material co-developed by Xiaomi EV, claimed to be the highest-strength hot-formed steel currently mass-produced in the auto industry. It offers significantly higher tensile and yield strength than 1500 MPa steel. Developed with AI, this steel is used in critical areas like all four door anti-collision beams, dramatically improving load-bearing and energy absorption in side impacts. Six hot-formed expansion tubes in the A- and B-pillars form an “embedded roll cage” structure, boosting pillar strength and enhancing cabin integrity in rollovers or underride collisions. Overall, 90.2% of the body is high-strength steel and aluminium alloys, contributing to outstanding torsional rigidity of 47,610 N·m/deg. The YU7 has passed extensive passive safety tests, covering major crash standards.
Intelligent Platform: Powerful and Connected
The YU7’s Electrical/Electronic Architecture (EEA) gets a significant upgrade. It uses a “Four-in-One Domain Control Module” integrating assisted driving, cockpit, central control, and telematics functions into a single unit. This slashes the number of controllers, saves space and weight, and improves system energy efficiency, adding range.
On the computing front, it’s packed. The cockpit uses a 4 nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip for a super smooth, fast-responding user experience and rapid OTA updates (as quick as 15 minutes). For assisted driving, it features the next-generation NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor™ platform with a mighty 700 TOPS of computing power and NVIDIA Blackwell architecture support for large models.
Connectivity is top-tier, featuring a dual 5G parallel network, a new UWB key, and Wi-Fi 7. With multiple Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, the onboard hotspot is faster, and it offers more interfaces to integrate into the “Human x Car x Home” smart ecosystem. Xiaomi says this new EEA has undergone rigorous testing, exceeding industry standards.
Assisted Driving: Hardware Ready
The YU7 comes standard with an impressive suite of assisted driving hardware. Beyond the powerful Thor chip, every YU7 gets LiDAR (for better low-light and obstacle detection, up to 200m range). There’s also 4D millimeter-wave radar, which adds altitude data for better resolution and detection distance (up to 200m for a car, 100m for a person), useful for detecting sudden braking or perceiving things in bad weather. Seven ultra-transparent anti-glare cameras use special coatings and tech for clearer images, even in bright conditions. In total, that’s the Thor chip, 1 LiDAR, 1 4D radar, 11 cameras, and 12 ultrasonic radars as standard.
Extra Learning: Driving Training
Xiaomi EV isn’t just selling cars; they’re advocating for “respect for speed, safe driving”. They offer elite driving training and are adding advanced driving training modules covering things like emergency manoeuvres, slalom, cornering, and wet surface handling. This is designed to help owners understand their vehicle’s limits and improve safety skills, priced at RMB 1,999.
Wrapping Up
So there you have it. The Xiaomi YU7 looks like a serious contender in the performance luxury SUV space, clearly aiming to appeal to those modern elites who want a blend of driving enjoyment, space, and high-tech luxury. It brings together striking design, cutting-edge displays, long range, strong performance, and robust safety. While we wait for the official sales launch scheduled for July, you can even get your hands on a rather detailed 1:18 scale alloy model in Emerald Green or Titanium Silver.
