BYD Rolls Out the Sealion 07 DM-i

Another Hybrid Contender Joins the Family

BYD has been busy expanding its lineup, and the latest addition is quite interesting. Meet the BYD Sealion 07 DM-i, a new hybrid SUV that’s just been launched in China. It’s the fourth model to join BYD’s popular Sealion family and slots in as a hybrid sibling to the all-electric Sealion 07 EV that debuted back in May 2024. Described as a mid-sized to mid-to-large-size SUV, this newcomer is aiming to shake things up in its segment.

Under the Hood: Fifth-Gen Hybrid Power
The Sealion 07 DM-i is built on BYD’s latest fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) hybrid platform, known as DM 5.0. This system was released in May 2024 and is designed to bring enhanced fuel efficiency and improved hybrid performance, promising lower fuel consumption.

Power comes from a 1.5T engine which produces 115 kW of peak power and 225 Nm of peak torque. The vehicle features a 60-litre fuel tank and comes standard with a 26.6 kWh blade battery. On electric power alone, it offers a CLTC electric range of up to 150 km, with sources also stating a range of 135 km to 150 km. Combined, the hybrid system allows for an impressive driving range of up to 1,320 km on a full charge and full tank. In hybrid mode, it boasts an NEDC fuel consumption figure of just 4.7L/100km.
The Sealion 07 DM-i is available with different motor configurations:

•The two entry-level models are front-wheel-drive, powered by a system delivering 200 kW peak power and 315 Nm of torque. These versions can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.
•The top-tier variant adds a rear motor with 150 kW of peak power and 340 Nm of additional torque. This significantly boosts performance, allowing it to reach 0–100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds. The top speed is noted as over 200 km/h.

The vehicle also uses BYD’s Yun-C damping control system and supports 53 kW DC fast charging.

Dimensions and Design Details
In terms of size, the Sealion 07 DM-i measures 4,880 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,750 mm in height. It rides on a 2,820 mm wheelbase. Key exterior design elements include e-shaped LED lights and a sloping roofline. If you’re wondering about luggage space, the trunk capacity is rated at 645 litres.

Tech & Features Galore
Inside the cabin, the Sealion 07 DM-i is packed with technology. It features a large 26-inch AR head-up display and a 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen that runs BYD’s DiLink 100 infotainment system. For a smoother interaction, the virtual voice assistant taps into DeepSeek’s AI large models, offering a better conversation experience and functioning as an AI voice assistant.

Driver assistance is handled by the DiPilot system, which comes in two versions:

•DiPilot 100 (with a triple-camera setup) is equipped on the two lower variants, supporting highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot).
•DiPilot 300 (with laser radar) is featured on the highest-priced model (or premium model), extending NOA capabilities to urban areas.

The DiPilot system offers functions like navigation assistance, lane change support, and parking assistance, with parking assistance claiming a 90% success rate in urban environments.
Beyond the tech screens, the interior offers some neat comfort features, like 10-point massage front seats, a dual-zone refrigerator capable of cooling to -6°C and heating to 50°C, and a 12-speaker Dynaudio audio system. The cabin design follows BYD’s “Glacier World” theme.
Interestingly, the Sealion 07 DM-i also supports an optional Ling Yuan drone system, developed in collaboration with DJI and released by BYD with DJI in March.

Pricing and Positioning
The Sealion 07 DM-i is being offered in China across three variants. Here’s a look at the pricing:

•150 Pilot edition: approx.  $23,460 – $23,500 USD
•150 Pilot plus edition: $24,900 USD
•135 Performance radar edition:  $28,483 – $28,500 USD

In terms of competition, the two entry-level models are seen as competitors to cars like the Tesla Model Y and Toyota Kluger. Other sources also position it against the Tesla Model Y, Li Auto L6, and Toyota Highlander.
While there’s no official word yet on whether this new hybrid SUV will be sold in Australia, BYD’s Chinese executives have indicated that global sales are imminent as part of the expansion of the Sealion offering. Sources suggest plans for future availability in Southeast Asia, Europe, and Australia.

Given its pricing below many premium competitors and its extensive features list, analysts anticipate a strong reception.
