Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NIO is shaking things up. Known for its premium EVs, NIO is now aiming for a broader audience with a more accessible brand, and the Onvo L90 is leading the charge. This new electric SUV, coming from a more affordable sub-brand , is squarely targeting families who want comfort, power, and all the latest tech.
The Onvo L90 has officially been unveiled at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show. Built on Nio’s NT3.0 platform , this large SUV sports a more executive and imposing design compared to its sportier sibling, the L60. While maintaining the Onvo family design, the L90 adopts a more squared-off and dignified look, projecting stability and presence. Interestingly, the front even features a “shark nose” design, a nod to Nio’s design philosophy.
Performance That Packs a Punch
Don’t let the family-friendly focus fool you; this SUV has some serious muscle. Underneath its generous frame are two electric motors delivering a combined output of 590 horsepower. This kind of power means acceleration comparable to sports cars, all while ensuring optimal traction. The L90 is built on a 900V electrical system, which is a step up from the 800V platform mentioned in another source.
Range anxiety should also be a thing of the past, with a claimed range of up to 600 kilometres based on the CLTC cycle. Even better, the ultra-fast charging capability of up to 500 kW means you can add significant range in just a few minutes, making both daily commutes and long journeys a breeze.

The Onvo L90 is clearly designed with families in mind, offering three rows of seats with space for six or seven passengers. For now, the Onvo L90 is primarily aimed at the Chinese market. However, its strategic positioning with a promising price-to-performance ratio could favour exports to Europe, including the UK. That said, there are hurdles to overcome, such as European homologation, meeting strict safety standards, and winning over a market that can be cautious about emerging brands. The UK market’s expectations for finish and reliability, along with fierce competition from European manufacturers, will also be significant challenges. Nevertheless, for UK buyers seeking innovation and electrified performance at a compelling price, the Onvo L90 could be a very interesting contender.
