Mazda Ditches Saloon Shape for its All-New, All-Electric 6e Hatchback

The Mazda 6e is a brand-new, all-electric car, and it signals a significant departure for the Japanese brand. Instead of a traditional saloon, the 6e adopts a sleek five-door hatchback design, bringing a modern twist to the legacy of the popular Mazda6 saloon. The new model was unveiled at the Brussels Motor Show, offering a glimpse into the future of Mazda’s electric vehicle (EV) lineup.

A Collaborative Effort with Chinese Roots
Interestingly, the 6e is not entirely a Mazda creation. It’s a result of a partnership with Changan, a major Chinese automaker. While Mazda focused on design and driving dynamics, Changan provided expertise in electrification and smart cabin technologies. This collaborative approach allowed Mazda to leverage Changan’s advanced battery technology and manufacturing capacity.

The 6e’s design echoes familiar Mazda cues, such as the flowing lines and sculpted details found in models like the CX-30. However, it also boasts distinctive elements like frameless doors, integrated door handles, and a bold lighting signature. The electronically extendable rear spoiler adds a touch of sportiness and improves stability at speed.

Power and Range to Rival Established EVs
Available with two battery options (68.8kWh and 80kWh), the 6e offers a range of up to 300 miles (482km) and 345 miles (555km), respectively. Both versions feature rear-wheel drive and can be rapidly charged using DC charging technology. The smaller battery can charge from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes, while the larger battery takes 45 minutes for the same charge.

Interior Blends Technology and Japanese Aesthetics
Inside, the Mazda 6e presents a modern and spacious cabin. The panoramic roof floods the interior with natural light, enhancing the sense of space, while the floating centre console and instrument panel contribute to a feeling of lightness, inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘Ma’.

Technology takes centre stage, with a 14.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and an augmented reality head-up display. The 6e also incorporates new features for Mazda, such as hand gesture and voice control.

A Strategic Shift for Mazda in EU
The Mazda 6e marks a significant shift for the brand in EU, where it’s expected to launch in 2026. Mazda aims to attract existing Mazda6 owners and fleet managers looking for a premium electric car with a focus on driving pleasure. The company believes that the 6e will play a key role in its ‘multi-solution approach’, which encompasses mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric vehicles.

The Mazda 6e is set to become a pivotal model for the brand in the European market. Its sleek design, impressive range, and focus on driving experience could make it a compelling alternative to established EV players.
