Kia unveils EV4 concept, a futuristic liftback with sustainable materials
Kia has revealed its latest electric vehicle concept, the EV4, at a special event in Seoul. The EV4 is a sleek four-door car that combines the proportions of a sedan with the practicality of a hatchback. The EV4 is part of Kia’s ambitious plan to launch 11 new EVs by 2026 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
The EV4 is based on the E-GMP platform, which also underpins the EV6 and EV9 models. However, unlike those models, the EV4 uses a 400-volt architecture, which means it will have slower charging speeds but lower costs. Kia has not disclosed the powertrain details of the EV4, but it is expected to offer single- and dual-motor variants, and possibly a high-performance GT version.
The design of the EV4 is striking, with a low roofline, a long liftback, and a massive rear overhang. The front end features a slim grille with LED headlights and daytime running lights. The rear end has a distinctive shape with a roof spoiler and taillights that resemble the Cadillac CT4. The EV4 also has three-spoke wheels that add to its futuristic look.
The interior of the EV4 showcases Kia’s use of alternative and sustainable materials. The cabin is made of 100% recycled cotton treated with natural dyes, and the console table is made of hemp fibers. The EV4 also has some innovative features, such as directional and backlit pieces that control the airflow, and a sliding center console that can adjust to different seating positions.
The EV4 concept is not just a design exercise, but a preview of a production model that will join Kia’s EV lineup in the next few years. Kia has not confirmed if the EV4 will be sold in the US market, where sedans are losing popularity to SUVs and crossovers. However, Kia hopes that the EV4 will appeal to customers who want a stylish and eco-friendly car that can challenge the conventional sedan typology.
