The new Mercedes-AMG GT has made its official debut at the Monterey Car Week. The second generation gets all-wheel drive and active aerodynamics.
Mercedes has presented the second generation of its rival to the Porsche 911. The new AMG GT is an evolution of the original design, but it refines the existing elements and introduces some new ones, which make the car fit better into the current range of the German manufacturer.
The new AMG GT remains unmistakable, even though every element of the bodywork has been redesigned for this new generation. The front end is easily identified as an AMG GT, keeping the Panamericana grille with vertical elements, but the opening is larger, similar to the one found on the Black Series version of the previous generation. The headlights are more rounded, and the taillights are now interconnected through a decorative element.
The new Mercedes-AMG GT can also be purchased in a 2+2 configuration The proportions of the car are now somewhat more harmonious, given the larger dimensions of the new model. The second generation Mercedes-AMG GT has grown by 18.2 centimeters in length, measuring 4.72 meters. It is also 4.5 cm wider and 6.6 cm taller than its predecessor.
Despite the familiar look, the car is built on a new platform, which offers more interior space and a larger boot. In addition, thanks to the additional volume inside, customers can choose a 4-seater configuration.
The dashboard with the 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and the 11.9-inch infotainment screen is taken from the SL convertible. The rear space seems quite cramped, as in most 2+2 cars, the rear seats being suitable for children or people who measure up to 1.5 m in height.
The coupe gets a 585 hp V8 engine The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine has been updated and produces more power and torque, while also being compatible with Euro 7 regulations.
At launch, the model will be available in two V8 engine variants. The base variant, bearing the 55 designation, produces 476 hp and 700 Nm, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds, and the top speed is 275 km/h. The more powerful variant, titled GT 63, produces 585 hp and 800 Nm, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and can reach a top speed of 315 km/h. The engine is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and, in comparison to its predecessor, can only be purchased with 4Matic all-wheel drive.
Mercedes hasn’t yet disclosed prices, but budget around $130,000 as a starting point. When the vehicle hits dealerships in the first half of 2024, we’ll know more.
