The Kia EV5 is primarily intended for the Chinese market, but Kia intends to market the model in its home Korean market and other markets as well. Who are those markets and whether the model will reach us is not something we have a definitive answer for at this stage. However, one thing is certain – this is indeed the electric vehicle that Kia needs here, a car that is expected to be significantly cheaper than the pricier EV6. And yes, it’s a bit larger and more spacious than models like the BYD e3.
The Kia EV5, like all of Kia’s dedicated electric models, is based on the E-GMP platform. It has a length of 4,615 mm, a width of 1,875 mm, a height of 1,715 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,750 mm.
In the Chinese market, the model will be marketed with a rear electric motor producing 215 horsepower and a maximum torque of 31.6 kgm. Instead of NMC batteries, it will come with 82 kWh LFP batteries. Outside the Chinese market, the model will be offered with NMC batteries like the rest of Kia’s electric models.
The exterior design, much of which is influenced by the flagship Kia EV9, remains very faithful to the design presented with the concept for the model earlier this year. As mentioned, full details about the model will be revealed next week.
