The 2024 BMW 5 series

BMW is bringing to the market two EV versions of the 5 series

The German automaker has unveiled the first photographs and details about the next 5 Series generation. For the first time, the sedan from Munich will be available in an electric variant known as the i5.

After a lengthy wait, BMW has finally released the eighth version of the 5 Series sedan. It will be manufactured alongside the electric version at the Dingolfing plant, where it has been produced for the past 50 years. The traditional variants will be ready in October, while the electric versions will be available immediately. Beginning in 2024, the BMW 5 Series will be available in Touring trim.

Dimensions

The new BMW 5 Series is larger than the model it replaces: the length is 5,060 millimeters (+97 mm), the width is 1,900 millimeters (+32 mm), the height is 1,515 millimeters (+36 mm), and the wheelbase is 2,995 millimeters (+20 mm).

Design

The new 5 Series generation is based on a slightly streamlined, fresh design language. A modern interpretation of the front grille (with an optional illuminated contour), vertically positioned LED elements that serve as turn signals and daytime running lights, wheel sizes ranging from 18 to 21 inches, the number 5 embossed on the C-pillar, and taillights with a chrome strip are all available.

M Sport and M Sport Pro packages are offered as options. The color palette includes three BMW Individual colors from the start.

Interior

BMW has prepared the Curved Display technology (a 12.3-inch screen for the instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch center display), which is currently seen in the BMW 7 Series, for the interior. We now have a redesigned steering wheel with two or three spokes, fewer physical buttons, standard new sport seats, and the BMW OS 8.5 multimedia system. The steering wheel is now available in synthetic leather for the first time.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features. Passengers can watch video content on the center display, and the AirConsole platform allows them to play games even when the car is stopped.

BMW Live Cockpit Professional technology, with Head-up Display and enhanced reality, is optional.

A first for the Munich-based manufacturer, the new 5 Series comes standard with a vegan interior.

The seats, dashboard, doors, and steering wheel are upholstered in a material that mimics leather and can be ordered with perforations as well. The option of Merino leather upholstery remains available.

Engines

The new generation BMW 5 Series is available with a variety of engines. This includes traditional gasoline and diesel engines that work in conjunction with a 48V mild-hybrid system.

Customers will be able to choose between the 520i, which has 208 horsepower, and the 520d and 520d xDrive, both of which have 197 horsepower. The selection will be enhanced in the spring of 2024 with two plug-in hybrid models and a 6-cylinder diesel engine.

The combustion engines are paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission.

Hybrid versions

The first, the 530e, is powered by a 2.0-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. They produce 299 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque when combined, allowing the car to reach 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h. The electric mode has a range of 87 to 102 kilometers.

The 550e xDrive is the second plug-in hybrid model, with a 3.0-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor. The system produces 489 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque in this configuration, allowing the car to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and reach a high speed of 250 km/h. The electric range ranges from 79 to 90 kilometers.

    BMW i5

Undoubtedly, the big news is the launch of a fully electric 5 Series. The new BMW i5 will be available in two versions: the i5 eDrive40 and the i5 M60 xDrive.

The i5 eDrive40 features a single motor, rear-wheel drive, 313 horsepower / 340 PS with Sport Boost or Launch Control. It reaches 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 193 km/h.

The battery has a net capacity of 81.2 kWh and provides the i5 eDrive40 version with a range of 477 to 582 kilometers, while the i5 M60 xDrive version has a range of 455 to 516 kilometers. By activating the Max Range function, their range can increase by up to 25%.

Charging time is approximately 30 minutes for a session from 10% to 80% at a fast charging station (205 kW). When charging from an AC outlet, the car can be charged at either 11 kW or 22 kW, depending on the optional configuration.

The M Sport suspension, M Sport braking system, and Adaptive Professional suspension are optional. The latter is standard for the i5 M60 xDrive. The integral steering system is also optional.

        Driver assistance systems

The new BMW 5 Series Sedan offers an expanded range of partially automated driving and parking systems, available as standard or optional features. These systems are supported by innovative technology to enhance their functionality.

One notable highlight is the optional Driving Assistant Professional, which includes features such as Steering and Lane Control Assist, Distance Control with Stop & Go function, and the Highway Assistant in select markets. The Highway Assistant can take over steering tasks on highways with separate lanes, allowing the driver to momentarily remove their hands from the steering wheel while closely monitoring traffic. The new BMW 5 Series introduces the Active Lane Change Assistant with eye confirmation, enabling the driver to confirm a suggested lane change by checking the exterior mirror. The system takes control of the necessary steering movements, subject to traffic conditions.

Standard in the new BMW 5 Series Sedan is the Parking Assistant, which includes Reversing Assist. For more advanced parking capabilities, the optional Parking Assistant Professional allows for automated parking and maneuvering of up to 200 meters, controllable from within the vehicle or through a smartphone app.
